SAVE OUR ICONIC PENANG FERRIES!

Our state icon and good memories will cease operation on 31st December and will be replaced by ugly PASSENGER ONLY catamaran by 2022.

There are mentions of aging and lack of vehicle demand when it came to decision, however, any person who took Penang Ferry before should have experienced the infamous long queue every time they take the ferry, which we do not need a statistician to acknowledge that.

There are still many motorbike and car travelling between Bagan and George Town area depending on our Ferry service as detouring to Penang Bridge means an additional 27km ride/drive.

(Not to mention it is much safer for motorcyclists to take ferry instead of using the accident prone Penang Bridge)

The statistics that they show that there are low demands on Ferry service by car is not because of low demand, but fed-up motorists who gave up waiting for next Ferry and unwillingly detour for 20 over kilometers!

When they claim that they had no budget to refurbish the ferries and port "due to aging", they are spending By mid-2022, five new vessels – three “water buses” and two transporters for motorcycles and emergency vehicles – will be introduced at a cost of RM64 million.

Penang is an UNESCO world heritage city and when we should treasure our working antiques instead of throwing it away just because "it aged"!

With this petition, we hope that Penang State government, NGOs, Federal Government can take this matter seriously and reverse the decision of implementing the ugly PASSENGER ONLY catamarans!
