Pedestrianize Calgary's 17th Ave SW

Pedestrianize Calgary's 17th Ave SW
The Issue
Transform 17th Ave into a Vibrant, Pedestrian-Friendly Street
As reported in the Calgary Herald, in April 2024 the 17th Ave BIA announced they would not pursue temporary pedestrianization of the street during the summer. In our opinion, this decision does not reflect the community's will or best interests.
We stand together to call for a bold re-imagining of 17th Ave SW.
Our Proposal
We propose the pedestrianization of 17th Ave SW during select weekends in the summer months. This initiative will not only enhance the area's appeal but also:
- Stimulate local businesses by increasing foot traffic and enabling more outdoor dining and retail opportunities.
- Improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike by reducing traffic noise and pollution.
- Create a safer, more engaging environment where the community can come together for events, markets, and other public gatherings.
Global Examples and Local Benefits
Cities worldwide have demonstrated the positive impacts of pedestrian zones — boosting local economies, enriching cultural life, and fostering more sustainable urban environments. It’s time for Calgary to join this global movement towards more livable, resilient cities.
Call to Action
We urge the 17th Ave BIA to enact a Pedestrian Pilot with an open, community-focused approach. Let’s work together to unlock the full potential of 17th Ave SW, making it a beacon of urban innovation and a testament to the vibrant spirit of Calgary.

NOTE: We wish to provide a correction to the above, the BIA has not explicitly halted plans for temporary pedestrianization.
However, according to the Calgary Herald article published on April 7, 2024 titled “'Not a one-size-fits-all': Car-free portion of 17th Avenue a no-go for many businesses”, BIA businesses voted on the idea of a road closure via a survey conducted last summer, and in the words of the BIA’s Executive Director, “What was overwhelming, is that they just said no,”.
We feel that based on the BIA representative’s comments that any pedestrianization of the 17th Ave corridor is not a priority.
We strongly believe that these findings to not accurately reflect the perspective of many community members.
