The Issue

The residents of Stafford Avenue and surrounding blocks in our community are deeply concerned about the excessive speeding and unsafe driving conditions prevalent in our neighborhood, particularly along the stretch of Stafford Avenue between Heenan Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard. This section of road is a crucial part of our daily lives, as it not only serves as a major access route but also leads to the beloved Sweetbrook Bluebelt Park used by local residents, their children and pets. However, its current condition poses significant dangers to all who use it.

Stafford Avenue is primarily a residential area, and along this particular segment, it includes a deceptively sharp curve and is notably devoid of sidewalks. This lack of pedestrian infrastructure forces pedestrians, including children on their way to school and families walking their dogs, to share the perilous road with speeding vehicles. This unsafe situation is exacerbated by the fact that many vehicles treat this residential street like a major thoroughfare, ignoring the residential speed limits and warnings.

According to a recent study conducted by residents, cars often exceed the speed limit by 10 to 20 mph, even around the sharp curve. Such driving behavior not only endangers pedestrians but also increases the risk of accidents and injuries. Speeding is the number one predictor of car accidents, and without immediate interventions like speed bumps, increased signage, or visible policing, we fear it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

We commend the efforts of local traffic authorities but urge that immediate action is taken to address this serious issue. Introducing traffic calming measures such as speed bumps on Stafford Avenue would greatly enhance the safety of our community.

Our community deserves to feel secure when leaving their homes and walking to nearby locations without the risk of being struck by a speeding vehicle. As residents who care deeply about our safety and the wellbeing of our children and neighbors, we urge city officials and traffic regulators to prioritize this issue and undertake necessary actions to mitigate the dangers posed by reckless speeding on this road. Please sign this petition to support our cause in making Stafford Avenue safer for all.
