You may be anxious, seeing the overwhelming rise of racism, dictatorships, armed conflict, and environmental destruction ganging up against us.

You may even have a friend or have met someone that has come from a country that is not doing well. You have seen the weight in their eyes when they talk about their home. 

For those who have relatives in their countries, it is even worse, as they know the danger they can be exposed to. Famine, environmental degradation, violence, and sexual abuse happen more often as the situation of the countries deteriorates. 

You wish there was something more that you could do for them, but the truth is that these are complex situations and one single person cannot solve them. You may feel powerless, stuck, and even alone in this effort.

But you are not alone, there are more of us. And the more we are, the more power we have. As a matter of fact, today there are more coordinated efforts to stop human rights abuses, to stop dictators, to stop environmental degradation, to stop police brutality, to stop discrimination, and to bring perpetrators to justice, than ever before.

The problem is that all these grassroots initiatives are severely understaffed, under-trained, under-supported. If these efforts were properly supported with technology, training, and funding, we would all benefit from seeing changes happening around us. 

States and international organizations don't always have the solution: the solution most often lies with the knowledge of those working on the ground.

In a world where millions of people have become refugees because of wars and dictatorships, and where climate destruction is upon us, most human rights defenders usually work long hours without pay, protection, or endorsement of any kind.

You already pay your taxes, now it is the time to have a saying in what they are used for. 

Only by supporting grassroots projects and changemakers, can we truly preserve our future.
