Holloway Prison Giveaway Scandal

The Issue

The people of Islington have been robbed by Peabody Housing Association.  In March 2019, we were told Peabody had “bought” the empty Holloway Prison site for £82 million.  But as well as receiving a loan of £41.6 million from the Mayor of London, it has now emerged they also got a grant of £39.8 million.  In other words, it was a giveaway!

You might think, with 10 acres of free land, Peabody – a so-called “social landlord” - would be willing and able to make a real difference to the huge housing waiting list in Islington.  When they got the site, Peabody pledged 42% of the 1,000 new homes would be for social rent.  Now they’re back-tracking.  They’re also trying to get out of building the Women’s Building they promised.
This is unacceptable.  Islington people said they wanted council housing built on the Holloway site because it’s public land.  Peabody just want to make money and force more working class people out of the borough.

Our Council and the Mayor of London must not allow this.

At a time when we’re worrying about our health, our jobs and the future of our families, a good quality, energy-efficient, truly affordable home has never been more important.  Please sign the petition to demand:

60% of the new homes at Holloway Prison are at council equivalent rents, with a mix of sizes.

A dedicated, visionary and transformative Women's Building that will help women in all areas of society
