The Issue

We, concerned residents and neighbors, call upon the Virginia Department of Transportation to take immediate action in paving Morgans Mill Road to enhance safety for both residents and visitors accessing the Appalachian Trail.

Morgans Mill Road serves as a vital route connecting our community to the iconic Appalachian Trail. However, its current condition poses significant risks that compromise the safety of all who utilize this important thoroughfare. By paving Morgans Mill Road, we can create a safer environment for pedestrians, motorists, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Here are some key reasons why this petition is crucial:

1. Increased Safety: The current road conditions on Morgans Mill Road are hazardous due to crowning, washouts, ruts, and lack of proper drainage. These factors contribute to accidents and near-misses regularly reported by both residents and trail users. Paving this road will significantly reduce these risks by providing a smooth surface that promotes better navigability while ensuring safe passage for all.

2. Benefits to Residents: Our experiences as Morgans Mill residents include failed deliveries from various freight carriers, flat tires and damage to personal vehicles, and in several sections of the road, the inability to safely pass oncoming vehicles. Paving our road would greatly alleviate these challenges.

3. FEMA and Appalachian Trail Usage: Currently, FEMA uses Morgans Mill as a critical thoroughfare for its various facilities. While FEMA sends trucks and SUVs to traverse our road on a daily basis, FEMA provides no support for road maintenance. The responsibility of maintaining the road through VDOT is left on the shoulders of Morgans Mill residents, who have to file individual complaints in order for the road to be serviced throughout the year. Additionally, the Appalachian Trail attracts thousands of visitors each year, which greatly increases the need for more frequent road grading and maintenance. At times, Morgans Mill residents are forced to use their own tractors and equipment to make the road safer before VDOT can address these issues.

4. Enhanced Emergency Response: In cases of emergencies along Morgans Mill Road, the Appalachian Trail, and surrounding areas, quick and efficient access for emergency vehicles is crucial. The current condition of Morgans Mill Road hinders response times due to its challenging terrain. Paving this road will enable emergency services to reach those in need promptly, potentially saving lives and minimizing the impact of emergencies.

We urge local authorities, including the Department of Transportation and relevant stakeholders, to prioritize the paving of Morgans Mill Road as a matter of public safety and community development. Let's work together to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
