The Issue

WhatsApp’s much-anticipated username feature, a seemingly forward-thinking move towards enhanced user privacy, now presents unforeseen risks to South African users already vulnerable to a significant WhatsApp scam epidemic. While it is undeniably a leap towards privacy by allowing WhatsApp users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers, it inadvertently throws a cloak of anonymity over fraudulent activities, leaving users in an extremely precarious position.

South Africa has been plagued with escalating incidences of WhatsApp scams, including fraudulent accounts impersonating banks, offering fake job opportunities, falsely representing the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and even conducting digital arrest scams. The anonymity enabled by hidden phone numbers could further empower these malicious actors, exacerbating an already severe problem and leaving ordinary users even more exposed.

**Our plea to Meta and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA):**

1. **Pause the rollout of the username feature in South Africa** until comprehensive anti-fraud measures are in place to protect users effectively.
2. **Implement robust verification systems** to detect and deter fraudulent accounts, ensuring only genuine users benefit from this feature's enhanced privacy.
3. **Increase resources for investigation and response** to reported fraud cases, preventing these scams from proliferating unchecked.

We acknowledge that privacy is a fundamental right and applaud innovations enhancing user anonymity. However, without robust protections against cyber fraud and impersonation, the rollout of this feature in South Africa would be premature and perilous for millions of users.

We urge Meta to recognize the unique challenges present in the South African digital landscape and prioritize user safety by suspending the full-scale release of usernames until effective security measures are instituted.

Sign this petition to hold Meta accountable for ensuring that user safety and privacy go hand-in-hand, by pressing pause on this feature until the necessary protections are in place.
