Pause the elimination of Sweetwater District roller hockey
The Issue
The students at eight schools in the District, recently learned that the Sweetwater Union High School District has decided to discontinue Metro Conference roller hockey beginning with the 2026–27 school year.
This decision affects far more than one school.
The District's own 2025–26 athletic census shows 115 roller hockey student-athletes across eight active Sweetwater high schools — 59 boys and 56 girls.
Sweetwater's own 2025–26 Athletics & Student Activities Year in Review lists roller hockey as part of the winter athletic season and recognizes Hilltop and Bonita Vista as league champions. The same report states that the Metro Conference is committed to expanding student engagement and providing students with meaningful athletic opportunities.
A September 16 District memorandum states that roller hockey is being discontinued based on participation trends, program sustainability, operational requirements, facility priorities, and the District's desire to focus resources on CIF-sanctioned sports.
Affected players, parents and coaches were not given an opportunity to review the underlying information or discuss alternatives before the decision was announced.
We are asking Superintendent Moisés Aguirre and the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees to Pause implementation of the decision and allow for a transparent review.
• Release the participation, cost, facility and operational information used to support the decision.
• Meet with affected players, parents and coaches.
• Evaluate reasonable alternatives before permanently eliminating the program.
We understand that the District must make responsible decisions about facilities, athletics and resources. We are not asking the District to ignore those concerns.
We are asking for transparency, community involvement and an opportunity to find a solution before a longstanding districtwide athletic program disappears.
