Pause the BASD vote regarding Consolidation
The Issue
The Bradford Area School Board is scheduled to vote on a crucial consolidation decision in November 2026, potentially impacting the safety and configuration of schools across the district. As parents and community members, we have been left with numerous unanswered questions regarding these decisions and their implications for student safety and well-being. We are asking for transparency, communication, and involvement in this process, which will have lasting effects on our children's future.
As a mother to four children, three of whom are in elementary grades within the Bradford Area School District, I am concerned about their safety and well-being, as well as that of their peers. These young students represent the future of Bradford and beyond, and it's our responsibility to ensure the best and safest environments for their education.
Recent studies, like the 2022 report from the National Safety Council, highlight the importance of involving parents and the community in educational decision-making, particularly when it comes to safety protocols. The American Academy of Pediatrics in 2023 emphasized that parent engagement is critical for student success and safety. Ignoring these facts could undermine the trust and collaborative spirit essential in fostering a safe and nurturing educational environment.
Significant changes to school buildings and grade configurations deserve careful planning, reliable data, and meaningful input from the families who will be directly affected. Other school districts have experienced firsthand why these decisions should not be rushed. In 2020, Hopewell Area School District faced community concerns over a proposed fourth-grade transition into a junior high school. The district ultimately withdrew the proposal after identifying inaccurate enrollment projections. This serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying enrollment data and addressing logistical concerns before making decisions that affect our children.
Before moving forward with consolidation, Bradford families deserve clear answers about how these changes will affect student safety, transportation, supervision, classroom sizes, educational resources, and the developmental needs of younger students. If elementary students will be sharing buildings or bus transportation with significantly older students, we deserve a detailed explanation of what those arrangements will look like and what safeguards will be in place.
We also deserve to understand the financial reasoning behind the proposed changes. How will the district compare the costs of different school configurations, including renovations, transportation, staffing, equipment, playgrounds, maintenance, and ongoing operating expenses? What enrollment projections and building-capacity assessments are being used to make these decisions? Have reasonable alternatives been fully evaluated, and will the supporting information be made available to the public?
We recognize that the district must make difficult decisions regarding its finances, facilities, and future. However, decisions of this magnitude should be based on accurate information, a thorough evaluation of alternatives, and a clear understanding of how students will be affected. Families should not be expected to accept significant changes without first receiving answers to reasonable questions about their children’s education and safety.
We are calling on the Bradford Area School Board to pause the voting process until parents have been provided with comprehensive answers regarding how changes will affect our children’s safety and well-being. This pause is crucial to ensure that decisions made reflect the community’s best interest.
By signing this petition, you join us in urging the Bradford Area School Board to put a halt on these proceedings until all parties are adequately informed and involved. Let us stand together to ensure a safer, brighter future for all our children. Please sign this petition to demand a pause and reconsideration for the betterment of our district’s future.
