Pause Military Separations Over Medically Necessary Shaving Exceptions
Pause Military Separations Over Medically Necessary Shaving Exceptions
The Issue
A medical need should receive an individualized medical and readiness review before it becomes the reason a service member loses a military career.
We call on Department of Defense and Army leadership, with oversight from Congress and the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, to temporarily pause administrative separations based solely on a medically necessary shaving exception or its duration while the policy receives an independent review.
Reports concerning MSG Darhem Victor Parker, known publicly as Black Unicorn, have brought attention to this issue. We ask the appropriate officials to verify his circumstances and ensure that applicable medical, notice, and procedural requirements are followed. This petition does not assert that retaliation or a procedural violation has been established, and it does not claim to speak for him.
We request:
1. An interim pause on separations based solely on medically necessary shaving exceptions or their duration, pending review.
2. An independent medical and operational readiness review, including consideration of reasonable accommodations and documented mission-specific safety needs.
3. Clear, consistent guidance on treatment timelines, individualized retention decisions, and opportunities for review or appeal.
4. Congressional examination of retention impacts and consistency across commands, with a public written response explaining the findings and next steps.
Operational safety requirements should remain in place. Any independently substantiated misconduct should be evaluated separately from the underlying medical need. Individual casework should proceed with the service member’s authorization and required privacy releases.
You do not have to agree with someone’s platform to support a fair process. Signing this petition is a concrete request for medical judgment, consistent standards, and accountable oversight.
We intend to submit this petition and its signature count as a follow-up to congressional outreach on this issue. Please sign and share if you support this request.
