Petition Update: Our Petition Has Been Formally Submitted

I wanted to provide everyone with an update — the petition has officially been submitted.

First, thank you again to every person who signed, shared, and helped bring attention to the questions being raised about FNSBSD Resolution 2027-08. When I sent the email this afternoon, 781 community members had added their names to this petition.

The petition and our request for a written response were sent directly to FNSBSD Superintendent Dr. Luke Meinert and the FNSBSD Board of Education.

For transparency and awareness, the correspondence was also copied to:

Alaska Department of Law / Attorney General's Office

These additional offices were included for awareness and to create a broader record of the concerns being raised by members of our community. The primary request for a response remains with FNSBSD leadership and the School Board.

Our request remains simple: Tell parents clearly and in writing what Resolution 2027-08 will mean for our children's school experience throughout October, what “promote” means in practice, and what procedures will govern any implementation.

Subject: Formal Submission of Community Petition Regarding FNSBSD Resolution 2027-08

Dr. Meinert,

I am formally submitting the attached petition regarding FNSBSD Resolution 2027-08 on behalf of myself and the community members who have joined this request.

As of this afternoon, September 21, 2026, the petition has received 781 signatures, with additional community members continuing to sign. I am incredibly grateful to the parents, guardians, and community members who have taken the time to add their names and ask the District for greater clarity and transparency regarding the implementation of Resolution 2027-08.

I want to be clear about the intent of this petition. We are not asking the Superintendent to overturn the School Board's vote. We are asking the District to provide parents with a clear, written explanation of what implementation of Resolution 2027-08 means—particularly what the term “promote” authorizes or encourages within our schools—and to ensure that any implementation follows applicable Alaska law, Board policy, parental-notification requirements, and established curriculum and material-approval procedures.

At its core, our question is simple:

What, if anything, will Resolution 2027-08 change about our children's school day throughout the month of October?

If implementation includes classroom instruction, teacher-created lessons, literature, videos, activities, presentations, guest speakers, displays, or other instructional materials or programming, parents are asking the District to clearly communicate what that implementation will look like and identify the procedures governing it.

Since the September 15 School Board meeting, I have personally sought clarification regarding what the term “promote” means and whether implementation may involve curriculum or classroom instruction. Those conversations have not provided me with a clear or consistent answer. This further demonstrates why a written explanation from the District would be valuable to families and would help eliminate uncertainty surrounding the resolution.

The live petition was also included with this correspondence.

I have copied the members of the FNSBSD Board of Education, Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, Alaska Department of Law, and members of our Interior legislative delegation on this correspondence for awareness of the questions and concerns being raised by members of our community.

I am not including these additional officials with the expectation that each office intervene or provide an individual response. Rather, I want there to be a clear record of what members of this community are asking of their school district: clarity, transparency, parental involvement, and adherence to the established processes governing our children's education.

Dr. Meinert and Members of the Board, I respectfully request a written response addressing the specific requests contained within the petition and clarifying how Resolution 2027-08 will be implemented within FNSBSD schools.
