The Issue

In the heart of southern Idaho, the Treasure Valley is facing a chaotic upheaval as multiple fiber internet companies rush to install their infrastructure. As residents, we find ourselves caught off guard by sudden, unannounced digging that turn our neighborhoods into construction zones. The installation of fiber optic cables, while seemingly a positive contribution to our internet options, is leaving behind a trail of physical damage and a slew of frustrations for local citizens.

In my community, we've seen the landscape change overnight. One morning, our sidewalks are intact; by afternoon, they're riddled with construction zones. This lack of regulation means that water mains are frequently broken during haphazard digging, causing not only inconvenience but also potentially thousands of dollars in damage. I've witnessed sinkholes emerge, driveways cracking and subsiding, and even families grappling with unexpected flooding inside their homes.

It's incredibly frustrating that large telecommunications companies operate with little coordination or transparency. Neighborhoods are left to absorb the costs of damage while facing disruption of our daily lives. We, the community, have little to no voice in these proceedings – our concerns brushed aside in the race to lay the next million-dollar mile of fiber, with multiple companies coming through one after another.

These fiber installations are occurring with minimal notification, leaving residents no time to prepare for the disruptions. Current timescales and methods employed by these companies are not only inconsiderate but also border on reckless.

We urgently call for a temporary halt to all fiber internet installations in the Treasure Valley until thorough and effective regulation is put in place. This means ensuring a transparent process where residents are notified well in advance of any construction activities and guidelines and safety measures are put in place to protect homeowners and their property.

Additionally, let's demand a strategic plan from these companies to manage and repair damages swiftly and fairly.  It’s crucial to facilitate an open dialogue between the corporations and the communities they serve.  Legally these companies cannot be forcing their way into neighborhoods under code 50-328, which regulates utilities, since they are not public utility companies that operate under detailed rate, investment and operation regulation.

We love our beautiful region and understand the necessity of upgrading our connectivity; however, it should not come at the cost of our safety and peace of mind. We must stand united to ensure these installations are carried out responsibly.

Join me in calling for this essential pause and urge local authorities and telecommunications companies to reform their processes to prevent further community and property disruption. Sign this petition to give Treasure Valley residents a voice and restore order to our homes.
