Pause construction on firetrap monster blocks in Walthamstow Town Square

The Issue

We call on Walthamstow's Labour MP, Stella Creasy, to intervene. Ask a question in parliament about this project and any similar ones going ahead despite regulations changing since planning was granted: new rules and recommendations should apply retroactively to all projects, to prevent repeats of Grenfell. Talk to the local authority too as our elected public representative, and demand the construction stop.

Residents and workers in Waltham Forest are looking on aghast as Walthamstow Town Square is gobbled up by two massive private tower blocks - which flout the latest fire safety rules.

Local people have fought for years to save the green space, and for council homes not unaffordable private flats. The borough council, led by the Labour Party, has ignored residents' concerns. Campaigning saved the square's trees and delayed construction, but it has now begun.

Following the Grenfell catastrophe, fire chiefs have called for all blocks over 18 metres to be built with more than one stairwell and one lift shaft. The mayor of London has set rules than all blocks over 30 metres must have more than one stairwell and one lift shaft. Both towers in the square are taller than this - but will have only one stairwell and one lift shaft.

The Save Our Square campaign says construction must be paused immediately. No Grenfells here!

We say:

  1. Pause construction now to ensure fire safety. No Grenfells here!
  2. Any future construction work must be kept to limited, reasonable hours agreed with local residents and workers
  3. Build council homes on council land, not unaffordable private flats!
