Pause Charter School Replication in IPS

Pause Charter School Replication in IPS
The Issue
We are petitioning the Indianapolis Public School (IPS) Board of Commissioners and IPS leadership to PAUSE the replication of charter schools within the Innovation Network until appropriate data (i.e. feasibility studies) have been conducted to either affirm or deny the need for additional educational seats to serve the Center Township school-age population.
- "[Indianapolis is] too crowded. It's oversaturated. There are too many schools," as stated by the Director of the Indiana Charter School Board, James Betley (Chalkbeat, 2023). Additionally, approximately 33% of charter schools opened since 2001 have closed (Chalkbeat, 2023).
- "Too many schools" leads to low enrollment, inadequate school funding, and decreased opportunities for students.
- A resolution from the IPS Board of Commissioners calling for increased replication of charter schools without data to support the need for replication is an abdication of responsibility.
- The constituents of IPS demand a right-sizing and accountable use of tax dollars to fund buildings and resources for children that are "right-sized", not meagerly enrolled campuses that lack resources. Let's innovate IPS responsibly.
