Two new AI data centres covering more than 120,000 square metres (17 full-size soccer fields) have been approved in principle for Cape Town as of 15 July ‘26

According to publicly reported estimates, these facilities could require up to 4.4 billion litres of water every year and approximately 174 megawatts of electricity to operate.

This is happening in a city that nearly reached Day Zero and in a country where electricity remains a national challenge.

We are not against technology or innovation.

We are asking for responsible development.

Before these projects receive any further approvals, we call on the relevant authorities to:

Commission an independent assessment of the long-term impact on Cape Town’s water resources and electricity infrastructure.
Make all environmental and technical assessments publicly accessible in plain language.
Hold meaningful public consultations with the communities most likely to be affected.
Clearly explain how water demand, electricity supply, diesel backup systems, noise, emissions, and heat will be managed.
Demonstrate why these projects are in the long-term public interest.
Artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure have a place in South Africa’s future. But no development should move forward without public confidence that the environmental costs have been properly assessed and that local communities have had a genuine opportunity to be heard.

Cape Town deserves innovation that is transparent, accountable, and sustainable.

If these projects will shape the future of Cape Town, then the people of Cape Town deserve clear answers before construction begins.
