US Presidents Should be Subject to Conflict of Interest Laws

US Presidents Should be Subject to Conflict of Interest Laws
The Issue
I was surprised to find out that US Presidents and Vice Presidents are not bound by the conflict of interest legislation that governs the rest of the US government - the 1978 Ethics in Government Act. This is a petition to change that and extend the legislation so the President and Vice President are abiding by the same rules as anyone else in public office.
We now have a president whose children are not only on his transition team, but will also be running his vast global business interests while he is in power - a far cry from a blind trust. Not requiring the President to abide by conflict of interest laws is opening up our country to corruption on an unparalleled scale.
As quoted from Bloomberg
"No laws exist that require Trump to distance himself from his commercial and residential real estate businesses, including hotels, golf courses and international licensing deals. While he will be required to continue to file asset disclosures, presidents are otherwise mostly exempt from the 1978 Ethics in Government Act -- an exception derived from the belief that such rules could keep commanders-in-chief from making tough decisions."
