Keep Fort Kent DHHS open!

Keep Fort Kent DHHS open!
The Issue
On May 27, 2016 all of the workers at the Fort Kent DHHS were told their local office would be shutting down and all staff relocated 45 miles away to Caribou by Sept 6, 2016. The Fort Kent office serves one of the largest geographical areas with some of the most elderly and disabled population in the State of Maine. We serve our people with pride and need the community’s support to stay local and continue to serve.
This is a travesty for our community. Not only does it begin the process of moving business out of our town by making 15 employees spend their time, energy and wages in another community but it also draws all of the people we serve out of Fort Kent. With over 100 people laid off in this last week, just one town over, how are those people to be served with dignity and respect? By travelling an extra hour with less money to sit in an office and wait for a stranger.
Not everyone can call the hotline and wait an hour for someone to answer, not all families have internet to go onto the website to conduct their personal business. Not every family has a reliable vehicle to travel to Caribou. What are these people to do?
This community will not be given anything we deserve, we must rise to the occasion TOGETHER and make our voices heard to TAKE what is ours. For those who cannot speak for themselves, for those who WILL DIE without the serves we provide. For your grandparents, your brother or sister, your parents who SURVIVE because of the workers efforts in Fort Kent. Our community’s families have a right to healthcare resources and advocates. The children of our community who are not safe have a right to be protected by someone who can reach them timely- that is not the case if a worker gets a call in Caribou and has to travel an hour to get there. ANYTHING can happen in that time.
We will fail ourselves if we do not fight.
Do it because what is right for our people and what is convenient for our government are not of the same.
WE URGE YOU TO SIGN THIS PETITION, SHARE IT AND CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO MAKE YOUR OPINION HEARD!
