Save Historic Downtown Melbourne's Atmosphere
The Issue
The people of Melbourne and those who frequent the dining and shopping businesses, and the people who operate those businesses in Historic Downtown Melbourne Florida, may be losing the quaint ambiance of the Historic Downtown as we know it.
Miami developers, Willow Street Capital, have signed a franchise agreement with Tapestry Collection by Hilton, a boutique brand of hotels. The plan is for an 11-story hotel to be built on a the parking lots at the corner of Strawbridge Avenue and Waverly Place. This would be directly behind Meg O'Malley's Restaurant and Pub, as well as other small businesses to the west of Meg's.
This is a tragedy for Meg's who have been a premier dining spot in the downtown area and the impact could prove disastrous to the entire downtown area.
This will impact parking for customers in the lots permanently, and will incur losses along Waverly Place during construction. The St. Paddy's Day celebration will not be able to continue as we know it, and this could possibly cause the loss of the Friday Fests, the Melbourne Art Show, and so much more. It will also have negative impact on the businesses along Waverly Place during construction.
During construction and ultimately, for the future, there will be loss of seating on Meg's back patio, all business owners will lose deliveries to the rear of their buildings and garbage pick up will be hindered.
The impact to Meg's alone, could see their business drop tremendously and jeopardize many of their employees positions.
I think that the City Council could come up with a much better location near the downtown area, that would be beneficial to all and have a much less negative impact on the businesses that bring much revenue to our city.
