Change to public restrooms: changing tables and ceiling tracks to accommodate non ambulatory adults.
The Issue
I would like to see fairness to all the American people including those with disabilities. We have made great strides to provide equal access to public facilities however we have still fallen short. Please allow me to explain. My daughter, Suzannah, is 12. She weighs 55 pounds and is about 43 inches tall. She is non ambulatory and is on life support. She cannot support any of her own weight. She is blind and non verbal as well. When out in public, for a doctors appointment, a trip to the mall, a trip to her school or anywhere, we will need to use a restroom. Suzannah is diapered however 1. It is unfair and unhealthy to her skin to keep her in a soiled diaper for a prolonged period and 2. Due to medical issues we have to catheterize her frequently to drain her bladder. This has to be done using sterile technique. There is no way to do this in current public facilities. Recently, we used an employee break room at the dentists office and the conference room at an attorneys office. It is inconvenient for the people I am asking, embarrassing and not dignified on behalf of my daughter. I propose that changing stations that can hold an adult capacity be in all public restrooms as well as ceiling tracks be in stalled for those who need it. As my child grows, I will be able to continue to accommodate her needs. There are adults today, clients of the local resource centers, who would also benefit from these changes.
