Remove the Skating Lesson from Patreon for Hate Speech
The Issue
The Skating Lesson, a popular Youtube channel devoted to figure skating, has repeatedly and mercilessly lodged racially motivated and inflammatory remarks against interracial couples and people of African descent in violation of the Hate Speech guidelines set forth by both Youtube and Patreon. This channel hosted by David Lease and Jonathan Byer must be held accountable for the frequently racially insensitive content to which they are producing which has in turn, caused harm to many.
In a 2019 video which ran for over a year, TSL host Dave Lease proceeds to use both humiliating and racially charged language to degrade an interracial couple. Referring to the couple consisting of a Black woman and White man as "weird looking" and "mismatched" among other things, He proceeds to attack the couples characters based solely on their differences and informs the audience they are together for financial gain.
Shortly after, Lease again attacks a 17 year old African American skater for performing the soundtrack of Porgie and Bess, a historical and legendary African American piece of music. As with the interracial couple, Lease uses racially insensitive language used specifically to embarrass and humiliate the girl due to choosing a piece of music which reflected her culture. monistic to
Both incidents received objection within figure skating forums and were seen as racially as both antagonistic and harmful towards the parties to which they were directed. The language used by Lease and Beyer, reinforces negative stereotypes for both mixed-race couples and the small minority of African descended skaters in the sport. These stereotypes cause harm to people who are already the most marginalized in society.
The term hate speech is understood as any kind of communication in speech, writing or behavior, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality.
It's 2020. People should enjoy this sport...without hearing hate.
