In light of recent events taking place across the South--to include the recent racially-motivated domestic terrorist attacks in Virginia--and taking into account that the creator of the Flag of the Confederate States of America, William Thompson, said, "as a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause. […] Such a flag […] would soon take rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations, and be hailed by the civilized world as the white man's flag" and taking into account the fact that William Thompson also said, "as a national emblem, it is significant of our higher cause, the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization contending against ignorance, infidelity, and barbarism[...]"; and taking into account the fact that Hot Springs derives the majority of its income from tourism; and taking into account the fact that we as a people should disassociate ourselves with racist symbols in any way in order to encourage tourism to continue; we the undersigned hereby petition the President of Chapter 80 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy that the Flag of the Confederate States of America, the Battle Flag of Northern Virginia (which was incorporated into the Flag of the Confederate States of America), and any other flag which has been co-opted by racist groups (the Flag of the United States of America withstanding) be removed immediately and a public statement discouraging their usage in any public capacity on City, State, or Federal Property where such removal would be in the purview of said Chapter and Organization. We stand united with our minority population here and across our country against hate, racism, and bigotry. We ask that any flag of the confederacy or any flag of a racist, facist, or treasonous nature find no place in our community, and for the United Daughters of the Confederacy to make public that domestic terrorism--in any form--will find no foothold in the hometown of true American Heroes.
