Pat Carlson tweeted, "Don't be fooled by anti-bullying rhetoric. Not about kids, it's about LGBT's getting their foot in door of schools."
The statement is inherently dangerous. No one responsible for the major anti-bullying programs in this country that have spurred and inspired discussions and campaigns was ever an educator or a politician. They were simply people who cared about the welfare of children. No one ever wanted the issue politicized. It's a shame that we even need to go to politicians and need the weight of laws to protect our children, but we do; however, when we do, one would think that the safety of children would be something upon which both sides could finally agree. I feel as if Ms. Carlson is using LGBT children as political pawns simply because of the sad fact that her political party came late to the cause on the this one. I want her to realize that just because they came late, doesn't mean we won't let them join. There isn't now, nor was there ever just rhetoric here. We just want to save lives. Deflecting, arguing or implying that somehow allowing LGBT people into our schools will bring down the system like a house of cards is a waste of time that many of our children simply do not have. For every child we lose, families are hurting, friends are lost and confused and there are even children on the other side, children that tortured and bullied these victims into irreversible acts that live with the consequences and are now forever changed themselves. We can stop this. It starts with saying the right things then practicing what we preach. Pat Carlson needs to retract that tweet.
