The Problem Isn’t Just Fake Service Dogs

When people talk about problems surrounding service dogs, one subject almost always comes up first: fake service dogs. And yes…they are a problem. When someone brings an untrained pet into public and claims it is a service dog, legitimate service dog teams can be put at risk. Businesses are put in difficult situations, and every bad encounter can make life harder for the handlers who depend on properly trained service dogs for their safety and independence. But there’s another part of this problem we don’t talk about nearly enough: The lack of education surrounding service dogs. People still believe a service dog has to be a certain breed or size. They believe there is an official certification, registration, ID card, or vest that proves a service dog is legitimate. Some people assume that if a disability isn’t visible, the handler must not really need the dog. Others pet, call to, whistle at, or intentionally distract working dogs without realizing that taking a service dog’s attention away from their handler can interfere with the job that dog has been trained to do. And businesses are often left trying to figure out the rules themselves. That’s where legitimate service dog teams can end up paying the price. Tiny doesn’t look like what some people picture when they hear the words service dog. She’s small. She’s owner trained. And she is trained to help me with disabilities that strangers may not be able to see. None of those things make her less legitimate. This is exactly why I continue advocating for Tiny’s Bill. Education isn’t about giving service dog handlers special treatment. It’s about making sure everyone understands the rules…handlers, businesses, employees, and the public. We can address people misrepresenting pets as service animals without treating every legitimate handler like they have something to prove. We can protect businesses without creating unnecessary barriers for disabled people. And we can protect legitimate service dog teams by replacing assumptions with accurate information. Enforcement matters. But education matters too. If you believe better service dog education can make public spaces safer and more accessible for everyone, please continue helping us spread the word.
