Pass the Safe Communities Act in Massachusetts
The Issue
Massachusetts has an opportunity to reverse the inhumane oppression of immigrants: The Safe Communities Act. This legislation would restore community trust in law enforcement and guarantee equal justice regardless of citizenship status. It would help neutralize the campaign of terror still being waged against members of our own communities, keep a clear line between the police and ICE, and prevent immigrants from being stripped of their rights.
Last session, this bill received a favorable report from the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security and was poised to advance on Beacon Hill - however, all matters related to COVID received priority and the session ended without passage. The bill has been re-introduced for the new session.
Immigrants, undocumented or otherwise, are the lifeblood of our Commonwealth. They are our friends, our neighbors, our classmates, our colleagues. They deserve to know that they will not be removed from their homes, separated from their loved ones, or detained indefinitely with no recourse. They deserve to know that we, the residents of Massachusetts, will not tolerate their persecution.
