Mace was my baby. My family. And when he got sick, I did everything I could. I drained my savings, maxed out my loans, ran up CareCredit—everything. But when they told me it would be another $10,000 just to try to save him… I couldn’t do it. I had nothing left.
And that’s something no one prepares you for—the moment where love isn’t enough because money stands in the way.
No one should have to choose between their pet’s life and their finances. Pets ARE family. And this pain? It’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
That’s why I’m pushing for the Pets Are Family Act. This can save YOUR baby. This could have saved mine.

Just like a hospital would not turn away a human in a life-threatening situation, animals should not be denied care simply because their owner cannot afford it in that moment. Pets are not objects. They are family. They feel pain, fear, and love just like we do.
I recently went through this myself. I spent over $1,200 trying to save my dog, doing everything I could with the resources I had. Instead of receiving support, I was told I would need thousands more for treatment or be prepared to consider euthanasia. No pet owner should ever be put in a position where money determines whether their pet lives or dies.
Right now, there is no law — not in DC, not anywhere — that requires emergency veterinary care without upfront payment. That means even in life-or-death situations, pets can be turned away simply because of cost. That is unacceptable.
We need to change that.
Animals should be treated with the same urgency and compassion as humans in emergencies. They should be stabilized and given a chance to live, without payment being the barrier that decides their fate.
This is not just my story. This is something thousands of pet owners face every single day. People who love their animals deeply are being forced into impossible decisions because there is no system in place to support emergency veterinary care.
I am calling on the state to step in and fund veterinary emergency services, create assistance programs, and require clinics to provide life-saving stabilization regardless of immediate payment. This care should be state-funded and structured to be tax-deductible, ensuring that veterinary providers are compensated while families are not denied urgent care.
Just like human healthcare, there should be a system that ensures no life is turned away in a crisis.
