Kankakee County is facing a critical need for emergency overnight shelters, and the numbers don't lie. Homelessness is on the rise, and with the changing seasons, the urgency to secure a safe space for those in need is more pressing than ever. Since 2019, Fortitude has been a beacon of hope, offering shelter and warmth to countless individuals and families during harsh conditions. Fortitude provides services during the day to assist guests in finding housing, employment, and other basic needs, and shelter overnight. Our efforts have made a difference, and we are ready to advance those efforts even further with our newly remodeled building at 970 E Court.

Our desire to continue providing this essential service has been met with opposition. Recent communication with elected officials indicate hurdles in gaining support we had hoped to receive after six years of successful service to the community. These barriers only strengthen our resolve to ensure no individual is left out in the cold.

The new facility at 970 E Court is fully prepared to open its doors and welcome those seeking refuge. The recent remodeling has ensured it meets all safety and comfort requirements for an overnight shelter. Now, all that stands in the way is the approval of the necessary permit.

Our community has always supported each other, and now more than ever, we need to come together to demonstrate our commitment to every resident's dignity and safety. Very significant financial investment from private citizens have made this shelter a reality. By securing this permit, we will be taking a significant step towards reducing homelessness and providing a lifeline during emergencies.
