“Fashion is one of the least regulated industries,” said Maxine Bédat, the founder of the New Standard Institute. Making up 10% of global greenhouse emissions, the fashion industry is the third most harmful industry on the environment. The lack of regulation around large fashion houses has manifested in the major destruction of forests, extreme water usage, textile waste, exploitive labor practice, and serious pollution. For the first time, a bill has been proposed to challenge the detrimental practices of the fashion industry. New York's Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, The Fashion Act for short, will require companies to identify the damaging environmental and social impacts and set targets to reduce their impact. Failure for companies to comply would result in fines that go toward environmental justice projects. If passed, The Fashion Act will make New York state the catalyst for environmental justice worldwide.
