My love for the ocean began with the TV show Octonauts. As I grew older, I witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of plastic waste on our environment—from plastic bags stuck in trees to bottles littering our roadsides. While researching microplastics, I found the chance to join the Earth Echo Ambassador Program, which has further fueled my passion for environmental preservation and ignited my desire to make real changes. Now, I'm taking a step to act here in Harleysville, PA, by advocating for the introduction and passage of the Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) Act of 2025 in Pennsylvania.

The BYOB Act of 2025 is designed to significantly reduce plastic pollution by encouraging retailers, including grocery stores and pharmacies, to install refill stations for everyday household products like soap, detergent, and shampoo. Such stations will allow consumers to reuse containers they already own, substantially cutting down on single-use plastic waste.

Statistics show that America produces around 42 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, with single-use plastics making up a significant portion. In Pennsylvania alone, thousands of plastic bottles are discarded weekly, ending up in landfills and waterways. By passing this act, Pennsylvania can lead by example and mitigate this environmental crisis by encouraging sustainable practices among consumers and businesses.

Besides the environmental benefits, this act can help build community awareness and support for recycling and sustainability. It offers businesses an opportunity to innovate and provides eco-conscious consumers with options that align with their values.
