Pass the American Teacher Act — give teachers the pay they deserve!
The Issue
Teachers are a necessity in today’s society. The service they provide is one of the most valuable, and is needed for the success of us and our children. However, many teachers in the United States are barely able to make a living wage, and many need second jobs in order to make ends meet. This in-turn can cause teachers to leave the education industry, causing a lack of educators in our schools. This directly affects not only the teacher, but also the children and parents in the school district, as well as the school district itself. Immediate action is needed to make sure teachers know that they are appreciated, and to stop teachers from leaving the education industry altogether because of the lack of pay and respect. The well-being of our children and our children’s children relies on them.
If things stay the same, then before too long, we will see a noticeable decrease in the quality of education, as teachers will either quit due to lack of sufficient pay, or will lose motivation to put in their best effort due to the lack of a livable wage. Those teachers who remain will have to power through and do more work then should ever be required of them.
The American Teacher Act proposes to increase the minimum wage of teachers across the United States to $60,000. Now, if the American Teacher Act were to pass, teachers would be able to make enough money to have education be their primary and only job. Seeing as teachers work constantly to improve the lives of their students, both in and out of the classroom, sometimes even using their own funds to provide their students with the best education possible, this increase in wage is well deserved.
The passing of the American Teacher Act is of great urgency. There have been recent teacher revolts, demanding better pay and better school conditions, as well as a shortage of teachers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is more important than ever that this bill be passed as soon as possible. The well-being of not only the teachers, but the students and parents of countless school districts across the United States is in jeopardy. So, help us pass the American Teacher Act! Get teachers the pay they deserve!
