The Issue

When a family survives unimaginable tragedy, the last thing they should have to fight is a flood of online conspiracy theories about their own lives. That's what's happening right now in Massachusetts, where the family of three children who died in 2023 is now dealing with something almost as painful as the loss itself: strangers online spreading false claims about who was really responsible, based on nothing but speculation and clicks.

Lawyers for one family member say the false claims have escalated into "real life threats" to reputation, safety, and livelihood, and that law enforcement has now been notified, according to a statement reported by CBS Boston. Think about that. A grieving parent, already living through the worst thing imaginable, now has to hire a lawyer just to make baseless online rumors stop.

This isn't a partisan issue. Whether you lean left or right, everyone can agree that grieving families and crime victims shouldn't have to become their own legal defense team just because an anonymous account decided their tragedy makes good content. Existing harassment and defamation laws were mostly written before social media could turn a false claim into a nationwide pile-on within hours. They need to catch up.

We're calling on state and federal lawmakers to strengthen legal protections for crime victims, witnesses, and grieving families, giving them a clear, affordable path to stop targeted online harassment and conspiracy campaigns before they spiral out of control. No family should have to choose between grieving in peace and defending themselves from strangers online.

Sign the petition to demand stronger protections for victims and grieving families, before another family is forced to fight lies on top of loss.
