Pass Safe Harbor & Expanded Practice in NH - Protect Consumers and Practitioners
The Issue
After struggling with persistent health challenges for over five years, enduring the frustration of seeing over 15 medical doctors and specialists, and spending thousands of dollars on assessments, medications, and appointments with so-called specialists, only to be referred to yet another doctor whom I had to wait 6-8 months to see—without any alleviation of my suffering—I find myself turning more and more to the practice of complementary and alternative medicine. As a practitioner myself, my goal is to ensure that consumers are protected while safeguarding the rights of practitioners in New Hampshire and allowing licensed medical professionals to provide more care to their clients without fear of recourse for alternative or natural interventions.
Safe Harbor and Expanded Practice Legislation would empower practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine. By passing these bills, New Hampshire would join several other states including Colorado, New Mexico, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Arizona, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Minnesota in granting more freedom and rights to consumers looking to explore a variety of healthcare options.
✅ Benefits for Consumers
1. Expanded Access to Care
Consumers gain greater access to alternative and complementary therapies, such as herbalism, naturopathy, homeopathy, energy healing, and other non-mainstream treatments.
2. Freedom of Choice
Individuals are empowered to make informed decisions about their health care without government interference in choosing non-licensed or alternative providers. This will help protect a person's right to seek the health care of their choice; and ensure that consumers maintain access to all health care options including conventional treatment methods and other treatment methods and modalities designed to complement or substitute for conventional treatment methods.
3. Transparency and Disclosure
Many health freedom laws require practitioners to provide a clear disclosure form that explains their credentials, methods, and that they are not licensed medical doctors, improving informed consent.
4. Lower Costs
Alternative therapies are often more affordable than conventional medical care, providing options for those who are uninsured or underinsured.
5. Preventive and Holistic Approaches
Encourages the use of wellness-based, non-invasive therapies that focus on root causes and prevention rather than symptom management.
✅ Benefits for Practitioners
1. Legal Protection
Practitioners operating within the bounds of health freedom laws are protected from prosecution for practicing medicine without a license, as long as they meet disclosure and scope-of-practice requirements. This also benefits licensed practitioners like medical doctors, allowing them to engage in expanded practice services.
2. Legitimacy and Recognition
These laws help legitimize alternative health practices, encouraging more professionals to enter the field and develop businesses.
3. Clear Guidelines
Laws often include standardized disclosure requirements and scope limitations, reducing legal ambiguity and regulatory risks.
4. Professional Diversity
Allows a broader range of healing traditions and modalities to flourish in the wellness space, promoting innovation and client-centered care.
Currently, New Hampshire laws are restrictive for practitioners outside the conventional medical model. This greatly limits patient choice and practitioner capacity, leaving many people without viable alternatives to address chronic health issues. With expanded practice legislation, healthcare practitioners could offer a broader range of services, such as holistic consultations and alternative therapies, thereby giving consumers the power to choose the form of care that best serves their wellbeing.
Safe Harbor laws are necessary protections for both patients and practitioners. They create a legal environment where alternative and complementary health services can be provided without fear of reprisal from traditional medical authorities. Consumers deserve the right to access health practices they believe to be right for them, and practitioners should be free to provide these services without undue restriction.
Expanding practice and enacting Safe Harbor Legislation is not just about freedom; it's about optimizing health outcomes by diversifying the methods of care available in New Hampshire. People, like me, who have experienced the shortcomings of a narrowed healthcare system, deserve to have their voices heard and their health needs met through a wider spectrum of care.
This petition asks the state legislators of New Hampshire to prioritize Safe Harbor and Expanded Practice Legislation to protect consumer rights and practice freedom in healthcare. Join me in advocating for this change and ensure that everyone in New Hampshire has the freedom to pursue the healthcare that best suits their needs.
Sign this petition to urge the state of New Hampshire to act now. Together, we can make health freedom a reality for all its residents.
