Did you know that 30 to 60 percent of children from homes where domestic abuse is present are also victims of abuse themselves? We need to erase the stigmas that only women or men are victims of domestic abuse and violence so that those struggling may feel comfortable coming forward to seek help. There are many reasons why a child victim of abuse is not likely to tell anyone about their abuse. Often, the abusive parent will convince the child that they won’t be believed. It will cause more problems and threaten them with the consequences if they do. Children frequently remain silent to protect a non-abusive parent from upsetting information that would lead that parent to take action against the parent who is abusive. Wisconsin needs to address these problems and take action to protect our children from abuse because they are too afraid to say anything.
