Wisconsin is one of the few states that does not have a Red Flag Law, which allows courts to temporarily remove firearms from people who pose a danger to themselves or others. This is a serious gap in our public safety system that puts lives at risk every day. A red flag law would empower family members and law enforcement officers to intervene before a tragedy occurs, by petitioning a judge to issue an extreme risk protection order (ERPO). An ERPO would prohibit the person from possessing or purchasing guns for a specified period of time, while respecting their due process rights. A red flag law would not only prevent a tragedy like my son's, but also reduce suicides, domestic violence, and accidental shootings. It would also help address the mental health crisis that affects many gun owners and their families. A red flag law is a common-sense measure that has bipartisan support and is consistent with the Second Amendment. Please join me with over 80 percent of Wisconsin residents that support having this law passed.
