“Wisconsin desperately needs a renewal of a call for the state to adopt Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also known as “Red Flag” laws. This is in the wake of not only my son Henry’s death but also the deaths of two parents who killed their four children and two law enforcement officers in Barron County by a suspect who had previously threatened to kill police or deputies. There were warning signs before each one of these tragic events. Only 19 states have red flag laws, which allow someone to petition a court to hear evidence and determine if guns need to be removed from a person who has demonstrated to be a potential threat to themselves or others. Each state determines who is authorized to initiate the process—whether it is limited to family members and law enforcement or a wider array of individuals including co-workers, school officials, medical professionals, and current or former unmarried partners. If you’re a responsible gun owner, nobody is going to take anything away from you,” “The only time a gun is removed is when you are a threat to yourself or others.
