Many people who pose a high risk of harming themselves or someone else with a firearm can legally possess guns and would pass a background check required to purchase a new gun. State laws rarely provide a clear legal tool to restrict access to guns before a tragedy occurs, even when an individual is at risk of causing harm to self or others. Wisconsin needs an Extreme Risk Protection Order Law / Red Flag Law. Already in place in red and blue states across the country, Extreme Risk Protection Orders and Red Flag Laws allow guns to be removed from a situation where someone is in crisis or if there is reason to believe an individual is planning a shooting. Without a Red Flag Law, if a parent or friend suspects someone has a gun and is at imminent risk of suicide or a murder suicide, there is no recourse to help prevent a tragedy like my son Henry’s murder.
