Child abuse is taking the lives of children. There are an estimated 65,000 U.S. children per year who are court-ordered into unsafe visitation or joint custody with abusive parents over the objections of caring parents. Over the past decade, it has been documented that over 600 child homicides across the U.S. are caused by a parent involved in a conflict related to divorce, separation, custody, visitation, or child support. Courts must solve (validate or dismiss) any domestic violence claims prior to making visitation or custody decisions that affect the physical and/ or psychological well-being of children. Check welfare calls and "Red Flags" should be reported to the courts and taken seriously. Reports of any type of abuse made to law enforcement, school administration, health care workers, or private citizens in which it is believed that a child is in danger must be investigated and taken seriously until proven otherwise, with the understanding that the child may be afraid to talk about what is happening when confronted by the authorities. Wisconsin and many other states need to have a "Red Flag Law" or "Extreme Risk Protection Orders" set in law to protect our children and go from a lack of protection to protecting our children and giving them the protection they deserve.
