On a tragic day that will forever be etched in my heart, my beloved 31-year-old Shetland pony, affectionately known as Pony, was killed. She was in her stall, secure but not safe enough, as a stallion horse from the boarding facility where she was housed managed to breach inadequate containment. This preventable tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger safety standards at Ohio boarding facilities that house stallions.
Ohio lawmakers must take immediate action to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents from occurring again. We call for the enactment of "Pony's Law" which mandates:
- **Secure fencing and enclosures for stallions:** Boarders must ensure that all stallions are kept in areas with reliable fences and containment systems that withstand pressure and resist damage.
- **Regular inspection and maintenance:** Electric fences and containment systems must undergo routine inspections with swift repairs conducted after any fault is detected.
- **Immediate repair protocols:** Any broken fencing or faulty safety equipment should be immediately addressed to prevent further risks.
- **Minimum safety standards:** Clear and enforceable safety standards must be established for all boarding facilities housing stallions to ensure a safe environment for all horses.
- **Transparent accountability:** Require documentation and mandatory reporting when a horse is seriously injured or killed due to containment failure. There must be transparency and accountability for preventable failures.
