The Issue

No child should die because the adults around them, stayed silent.

In Michigan, if an adult knows a child in their home is being abused or is in life- threatening condition, but chooses to do nothing- they can face no legal consequences unless they are a mandated reporter like a teacher or doctor.

This loophole cost 8-year old Lyla her life.

Lyla was brutally beaten, left unable to move, and suffered for days until she died. Her own mother did nothing to save her- and the other adult in the home admitted knowing she couldn't walk or get help. He didn't call 911. He didn't take her to a hospital. He simply stated it "wasn't his responsibility" - and walked away without being charged.

That is unacceptable.

We demand the Michigan Legislature pass "Lyla's Law", which would:

1:  Require any adult living with a child to report suspected life-threatening abuse or neglect immediately.

2:  Make failure to act in cases resulting in serious harm a felony (up to 10 years).

3:  Make failure to act in cases of death a felony (up to 15 years).

4:  Protect adults who report in good faith from retaliation.

Children do not choose their home. They cannot protect themselves. The law must ensure the adults around them must protect them- or face justice.

Sign this petition to tell Michigan lawmakers: If you stand by while a child dies, you are guilty too. Pass Lyla's Law now.
