NamUs stands for the National Missing and Unidentified Peoples System. It is a system put in place for police officers and medical examiners to file their missing and unidentified bodies cases into one database.

This database is extremely important for locating and connecting unidentified bodies with missing people. It can help many precincts and people around our nation and state. Families of missing people can check into this database and help in the search of their loved ones as well.

As of now the states that require it are: NY, CT, TN, NJ, IL, OK, MI, OK, and NM. Ohio needs to join them.

There should be Ohio state legislation requiring our police officers, and medical examiners to put their missing and unidentified bodies into this system within 30\60 days after conducting a preliminary investigation. It is required in states such as Tennessee and New York, along with many others. Many positives could come from making legislation for this. Having our police and medical examiners be able to go through different reports from other states would definitely help solve many cases and the NamUs system is super easy to use as long as police departments and medical examiners keep on top of it.

We cannot turn an eye on those cases and this system while it sits online for everyone to use as an amazing tool. We need to work with our Representatives and the Attorney General to implement the regulation of this system into the hands of medical examiners and officers. Justice is important even when it seems like the trails ends. There is an absolute need for this requirement.

This is a non-partisan issue and affects us all. The positives of having and using this system regularly greatly out way any negatives. The state must keep NamUs up to date with the cases and any new information they have that could help locate missing people.

Below is a copy of Tennessee's legislation requiring medical examiners and law enforcement to put missing people and unidentified bodies into the NamUs system, which we could use as a basis for pur own legislation.
