Pass Korbin's Law to support grieving parents financially
The Issue
On April 24, 2026, I faced the unimaginable loss of my 10-year-old son, Korbin. In the aftermath, I discovered a harsh reality: while the world around you stops when you lose a child, the financial demands do not. Like many grieving parents, I was expected to process this devastating loss and simultaneously manage rent, utilities, car payments, and day-to-day expenses. The burden is immense, both emotionally and financially.
Parents who experience the loss of a child need time and support to grieve without the added pressure of financial obligations. Yet current systems offer only limited time—often just a few short days—to put shattered lives back together. That's why I'm urging for the passage of "Korbin’s Law," which will grant bereaved parents six months of financial protection following the loss of a child.
Every year, countless families across the United States find themselves in this heartbreaking situation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 21,000 infants and children die annually in the U.S. Each of these deaths leaves behind parents struggling not only with their profound grief but also with sustaining their financial stability.
This proposed law would provide a safety net, allowing grieving parents essential time to heal without the fear of losing their homes or struggling to provide for remaining family members. Korbin’s Law would include pausing or subsidizing payments on mortgages, utilities, and essential services for up to six months. It would offer parents a chance to focus on healing and care for their family without the relentless pressure of financial burdens.
This is not just about kindness—it's a necessity. Grieving parents deserve the dignity and space to mourn their children without being overwhelmed by financial stress. Implementing Korbin’s Law would reflect our collective compassion and understanding of the profound losses these families experience.
