The Issue

Every time I hear a story like mine, it breaks my heart a little more. When the first sign of abuse appears, it's vital to take action immediately. The first punch to a wall, the first scream, the first time you feel that chill of fear slip into your life—those are the moments to leave. But leaving isn’t easy without adequate support, especially when many survivors face financial control, financial abuse and intimidation. We need better protections and resources for those who want to escape such environments.

In the United States, countless individuals live in fear, feeling trapped in relationships where they know they need to leave but can’t see a way out. The lack of legal resources and support systems makes it incredibly difficult for people to break free without facing dire consequences. Domestic violence survivors often feel isolated and helpless, overshadowed by their partner’s control and aggressive behavior. We need to change this.

Passing federal protections focused on domestic violence survivors will provide the safety net they need to run away from abuse. It's more than just a legal framework; it's a lifeline that offers security, health, and hope. It's crucial to develop laws that ensure support for escape and recovery, embodying a system that recognizes the detailed ploys abusers use to maintain control and the barriers survivors encounter when attempting to leave.

We must hold space for healing by ensuring survivors have access to safe housing, legal assistance, counseling, and financial resources. Leaving should not mean turning your life upside down without any support. Making these protections available guarantees that survivors do not have to choose between living in danger or the hardships of leaving.

Let's work together to draft and pass federal protections that empower survivors of domestic violence to leave safely and with dignity. We can create a nation where leaving is viable and protective, and where healing becomes a collective reality. Sign this petition to voice our demand for action now.
