The Issue

I do not believe that animals should be used for testing. It is not their burden to bear the risks of scientific and commercial advancements meant for humans. If companies want to test their products that will be used for humans, they should find humans willing to participate, with due compensation. We do not have the right to subject animals to testing. Although animal bodies may share similarities with humans and potentially exhibit analogous reactions, they are not identical. Products meant for humans should be tested on human subjects. If a product is truly not harmful, why not test it on willing human participants?

In Tulsa, the potential exists for our city’s animals to be shipped off to research and animal testing labs, which is a travesty that must be stopped. Statute 4484 empowers us to deny pound seizures, yet we need our lawmakers to solidify this position by passing a crucial ordinance. Currently, Tulsa faces the grim possibility that animals taken off the streets or admitted to shelters may end up being subjected to painful and unnecessary testing. This is not the future for Tulsa that we envision.

Inhumane treatment has no place in our city. Studies prove that animal testing often fails to predict human reactions, rendering it not only unethical but also inefficient. According to a 2018 report by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 95% of drugs tested on animals fail in human trials. This stark statistic reveals the inadequacy and redundancy of animal testing, highlighting the urgent need for change.

Tulsa can be a leader in compassionate governance by enacting an ordinance that prohibits sending our beloved animals to such fates. Our city councilors and government play a crucial role in preserving the welfare of our animals and ensuring they remain safe and cared for within our community.

While statute 4484 only affects the state of Oklahoma, I encourage other states to adopt a resolution or statute such as this.

Please sign this petition urging our city councilors and government officials to pass an ordinance preventing the shipment of dogs and cats to testing labs. Together, we can ensure a humane and ethical future for animals in Tulsa, standing up against unnecessary and inhuman testing practices. Sign the petition and make your voice heard.
