I am a resident of the fastest growing county in North Carolina, which is also the sixth fastest-growing county in the nation. The rapid growth we are experiencing has highlighted our lack of infrastructure, insufficient funding, and concerns about access to clean water—issues critical for sustaining our burgeoning population.

The absence of home rule authority means we have limited control over matters that significantly impact our lives. For instance, prescribed burns continue to pose a health risk to all generations in our community, from newborns to the elderly. Despite being detrimental to our health, local authorities have little say in regulating these burns.

One of the pressing challenges we face is downzoning. With no authority over zoning decisions, our communities are left vulnerable to unchecked development, contributing to environmental degradation and decreased quality of life. Additionally, several areas in our county are prone to becoming landlocked during heavy rains, not to mention the perilous situation during hurricanes or floods. Without adequate land use planning, these issues may intensify, resulting in prolonged isolation and property damage.

Another grave concern is the affordability of housing. The younger generation, integral to our county's future, is being forced to relocate because our salaries are not commensurate with the escalating housing costs. The disparity between income and the cost of living is widening, leading to a community that is increasingly unaffordable for those who have grown up here.

It's crucial for our County Commissioners to pass a resolution demanding home rule authority in North Carolina. This empowerment would not only enhance local governance but also ensure that policies and regulations are tailored to meet our specific needs and challenges. By granting us this authority, the state would enable us to prioritize our community’s well-being and future sustainability.
