Pass a Nationwide Law for Classroom Surveillance in Special Education and Daycare Settings
The Issue
My name is Bianca, and I’m a mother to a level 3 autistic, nonverbal child.
Like so many other parents raising children with disabilities, I made the hardest decision of my life. I was forced to leave my job to care for my son full-time. He can’t communicate verbally, when something is wrong, or his general needs. He for sure can’t tell me if he’s being mistreated. I have to advocate for him with my eyes wide open—even when I’m not there.
That’s why I believe every educational facility, whether it’s a special education classroom or daycare center, should have surveillance cameras that parents can request to view when something doesn’t feel right.
In Texas, Senate Bill 507 already allows parents of children with disabilities to request video cameras in their child’s classroom. It was passed to protect students who cannot speak up for themselves—and to ensure accountability from staff and institutions. Why isn’t this the law in every state?
We put our trust in schools and daycares, but let’s be honest, hallway surveillance aren’t enough. What happens inside the classroom is what matters most—especially for kids with communication challenges, behavioral disabilities, or complex medical needs.
This isn’t about spying on teachers. This is about transparency, safety, and justice. If there’s ever a question—about injuries, behavior incidents, abuse, or neglect—parents deserve the right to know what happened.
I’m asking lawmakers to introduce a nationwide policy modeled after Texas SB 507 that:
Requires schools and licensed daycare centers to install cameras in classrooms that serve special needs students. This policy should allow parents/guardians/caregivers to request access to footage in the case of an incident.
There are too many stories of children coming home with bruises, trauma, or regression—and no one can explain why. Some kids get labeled “aggressive” when they’re really being mistreated. Without cameras, there’s no truth. There’s no justice.
I’m just one parent—but I know I’m not the only one scared, angry, and exhausted from fighting for basic protections. I shouldn’t have to guess if my son is safe. You shouldn’t either.
Sign this petition if you believe our children deserve protection—whether they can speak up for themselves or not. Let’s get this passed in every state! Protect our children!
