The Issue

As a mother who endured the heartbreak of losing a son to abhorrent lies, I understand all too well the devastating consequences of failing to protect our children from those who abuse their trust. It was only after my son's tragic passing that I discovered his abuser carried a dark history of inflicting harm on his own daughter. This revelation was not an isolated incident but part of a widespread problem that requires urgent attention.

Every year, millions of children fall victim to abusive caregivers, and tragically, many of these violations go unpunished due to the lack of stringent systems in place. According to data from the World Health Organization, nearly 1 in 4 adults have suffered physical abuse as children, which illustrates the urgent need for stronger protective measures.

One critical measure we can take is the creation of a national child abuse registry. Such a registry would allow for effective tracking and monitoring of individuals who have been convicted of child abuse, ensuring they cannot inflict further harm on innocent lives. Currently, 41 states have some form of registry for child abuse perpetrators, but their effectiveness is limited without a comprehensive national system that closes the gaps across state lines.

Furthermore, we need harsher penalties for repeat offenders. Studies have shown that repeat offenders are likely to re-offend without stringent interventions. Enhanced sentencing could serve as a significant deterrent and ensure that dangerous individuals are kept off the streets for longer periods. This means prioritizing the safety and well-being of our children over the prospect of recidivism by proven offenders.

I urge lawmakers and concerned citizens to advocate for these crucial changes. Our children deserve to grow up in a safe environment, free from the threat of violence and neglect. Let us unite in this pursuit, creating a national registry that not only holds abusers accountable but also protects potential future victims from harm.

Please sign this petition, voicing your support for a law that will establish a robust child abuse registry and enforce harsher punishments for repeat child abusers. Together, we can safeguard the innocent and prevent the cycle of abuse from perpetuating.
