The Issue

Hello, my name is Sierra and I’m one of many girls that attend Land O Lakes High School which happens to be apart of the Pasco County School District. Recently my school more than others has been unfairly dress coding many of our female students. From August 26th through the 28th (which is only three days) my school has dress coded at least 80 girls. Why is this a problem? The problem is that having a dress code like this and enforcing it the way our administration does marginalizes it’s female students and make us feel less important than our male counterparts. For example, one girl expressed to me that she was held in the media center all day due to dress code because none of her family members were able to bring her a change of clothes. Another girl told me she missed out on three hours of education because she was held in the media center due to a dress code violation. Not only does having a dress code sexualize underaged girls bodies it also insists that our school cares more about our appearance rather than our education. I’ve spoken and shared by opinion with many staff who seem to only be able to say “well you signed up for this” this statement is truly horrid because I didn’t sign up to be sexualized by grown adults, I signed up to better myself, I signed up to learn and grow as a person. Not to be subjectively looked at by my administrators. If we abolish our dress code we can completely eliminate the stigmas our school so badly re-enforces, we can make women more comfortable, and we can all enjoy school a little bit more.
