Black Lives Matter Pasadena started this petition to Pasadena City Council

City Manager Steve Mermell is on the wrong side of history. In the movement to protect and defend Black lives and the right to life itself, he has consistently proven unworthy.

From the City of Pasadena's website:

The Office of the City Manager provides oversight and direction to ensure that all departments are responding to City Council goals, applying policy consistently, identifying key issues that need Council direction, keeping abreast of the changing needs of the community, and planning the services, programs and projects that will ensure Pasadena maintains its status and character as a great community in which to live, work and play.

Steve Mermell holds the highest office in the City of Pasadena. In 2019, He made $477,445.63 in total pay and benefits. The Mayor of Pasadena makes $53,000 a year.

On 8/20/20, Mermell led the militant police response to protestors peacefully encamping near City Hall Pasadena which included hundreds of riot police from 4 cities, deploying Pasadena's own tank on first amendment protected protestors, and commercial sized tow trucks boxing in traffic.

Two mothers with their children were stopped at gunpoint that night, families who had been directly affected by Anthony's death and knew him very well.

Earlier that day, Mermell publicly stated it would be fine to do an encampment to the organizer. Mermell is a liar. The next day, he continued the harassment, by intimidating the sanctuary church where the protestors had sought safe refuge and encouraging Pasadena Police to barricade the streets surrounding City Hall, heavily surveil the City Hall zone in unmarked vehicles, and openly lie about their targeted approach to protestors questioning their bizarre behavior.

Steve Mermell has no problem targeting protestors practicing their first amendment rights. The day following his evil ambush, alongside Police Chief Perez, Jasmine Richards Abdullah caught him leaving City Hall and asked him why PPD responded in such a violent way, that even LAPD (the most murderous police force in the nation) had not done - his response: "This isn't L.A."

If you believe Pasadena should protect the First Amendment rights of its residents, at least to the extent of Los Angeles, sign this petition.

If you believe Steve Mermell's lack of regard for the loss of life is unacceptable, sign this petition.

If you believe that the City of Pasadena deserves a City Manager with courage to seek accountability and justice for the residents and good of our communities, sign this petition.

Steve Mermell, who does not even live in Pasadena, sees our City as a game. He seeks our fight for social justice and to protect all Black lives as a joke. He is not the right leader for this movement, nor this moment. In order for our local government to rise up and embrace the change Pasadena residents are demanding - we must demand City Council to rise up and fire Steve Mermell to make way for a City Manager that cares for the people.
