Parramatta Eels 2009 NRL Premiership
The issue
Dear Mr Abdo,
I am writing to you regarding a matter of great importance to the children of the Western Suburbs of Sydney, a Parramatta Eels NRL Premiership.
As you know, the last time the Eels won a Premiership was 1986. For 36 long years Eels supporters have languished in the swarm. Now, with so much commentary about the 'closing premiership window' at the Eels, it looks like the club will once again go without any new silverware in the cabinet. In fact, one commentator announced recently that the Eels are, 'on the nose'. This is due, of course, to the well publicised fact that so many quality players leaving the club at the end of the 2022 season. So who knows when the window will open again?
The last time the Eels were in a Grand Final was 2009. That's the year that Justin Bieber released ‘One Time’, the 'Twilight' saga was in the cinemas and low cut jeans became fashion. These are things that my children will never know, thank goodness, because my children didn't exist in 2009. Tragically, however, an Eels Premiership also did not exist.
This is a tragedy because as a child an Eels Premiership was something that I clung to in the eighties. I might not have known the embarrassment of a mullet, or the vulgarity of acid wash jeans or desert boots, but by Jack Gibson, I knew the Eels would hold aloft the Winfield Cup come September!
Again, as you know, the Eels lost the Grand Final in 2009 to the Melbourne Storm. However, the Melbourne Storm were found to be in breach of the salary cap and the Premiership was taken off them (is it any wonder with a team that included Smith, Cronk, Slater, Inglis, Hoffman and Finch). Now, here’s where I come to my point.
Give the 2009 Premiership, that was taken off the Storm, to the Eels. After all, they officially came 'second'. Doit. That years Premiership is just sitting there! Do it. So that my kids have something to hold on to. Do it, and be the first to refute the adage, ‘there’s no prize for second place!’
We the assigned, ask you, the CEO of the NRL, to give the Parramatta Eels the 2009 NRL Premiership.
