Parole Eligibility for Life Sentences Support House Bill 2135
The issue
Representative Jason Dawkins introduced a bill in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that will abolish Life-Without-Parole imprisonment in Pennsylvania and extend parole eligibility to those sentenced to Life imprisonment.
Bill 2135 would permit a person sentenced to life imprisonment to be released on parole after spending at least 15 years in prison. It also would extend parole eligibility retroactively to those sentenced before the legislation's effective date.
Life without parole sentencing is both immoral and expensive, and legislators and courts should take immediate and retroactive action to abolish these
sentences.
There are 21 countries in the world where life sentences, with or without the possibility of parole, are considered unconstitutional.
Pennsylvania will give life without parole for a crime, where in the same circumstances one would not have got it in another state or country. There's approx. 51,000+ men and women in PA state prisons. Approx. 5443 + serving life without parole sentences, or 1 in every 9.3 state prisoners have a life sentence.
The definition of Life Sentence in Pennsylvania is 'UNTIL ONE DIES'. It is not what you may think or see on TV where a person receives this sentence and could possibly be released after 10, 20, 30 years. Literally it is a Death Sentence. To say none of these human beings deserve a chance at parole and a chance to prove they are productive members of society is a disgrace. People are capable of changing.
Look around you at the children who are 5, 6 years old? Count the first 9.3 of those babies you see. The next 12, 13 years 1 of them will be sentenced to die in a PA state prison. We need to get this done now to stop them from doing this to children, your neighbors children, nephew, niece, cousin, brother, sister.
HB 2135 should receive the full support of Families and friends of Life Prisoners and Organizations seeking to end life without parole.
