Hong Kong is going to pass a bill to allow its authority to extradite people to China. That means the pro-Beijing SAR government can surrender as many people to the mainland as Beijing wants to send to jail.
It sparked concerns from foreign business groups and now US politicians step in. This is because not just Hongkongers, but also foreigners will be affected by this new extradition law. Not to mention if they are residing in Hong Kong, but even when they are on transit at the Hong Kong airport, the authority may arrest a particular person for rendition to China, if Beijing knew when such person would be in Hong Kong.
The United States are not obliged to help the people of Hong Kong. But they have the responsibility to protect their own citizens. So back to the UK, will the British government take care of its people residing in the Hong Kong SAR? Or just have our foreign secretary's repeated "concern" of the so-called One Country Two Systems?
